그림 속의 의학(58)우울증과 색채

우울증은 색채에 어떤 영향을 미칠까?
로스코(Mark Rothko, Marcus Rothkowitz 1903.9.25-1970.2.25)는 라트비아(당시 제정러시아)에서 태어나 10세에 미국으로 이민후 그의 작품이 생전에 당시 최고의 경매가에 오르는 등 미국의 화단에 큰 족적을 남겼으나 우울증으로 67세에 자살하였다. 그의 초기의 작품과 후기 우울증에 빠졌을 때의 작품이 서로 확연한 차이를 보여 여기에 소개한다.
그의 작품은 인간의 기본적 감정을 응축한 것으로, 화면을 형태가 거의 없이 단지 몇개의 강열한 색상만으로 채우기 때문에 추상표현주의 또는 색채주의로 분류되지만, 그러나 그는 다음같이 말하면서 그렇게 되기를 거부하였다. "나는 색채에 관심이 없다. 색채는 더 큰 무엇-그림에서 가장 중요한 주제-를 표현하기 위한 수단일 뿐이다."
그는 당시 여러 화가들로 부터 존경을 받았지만 57세까지 스스로는 그림을 가르치며 생계를 잇는 은둔적 생활을 하였다.
1950년대 후반, 그의 나이 50대부터 그림이 갑자기 어두워지는데, 당시 뉴욬의 어느 미식가의 식당에서 주문하여 설치된 그의 그림이 강열하고 명상적이기 때문에 분위기에 맞지않는다고 달가워하지 않았고, 끝내는 식댱에서 제대로 취급하지 않는다는 생각에 더 이상 그 계획에서 물러나고 만다. 아마 그때 벌써 그는 이미 우울증에 빠져있지 않았나 추측된다.
오햇동안 우울증으로 고생히던 그는 끝내 손목의 혈관은 끊어 자살하는데, 그날은 그가 그의 작품을 영국 테이트 갤러기에 기증하여 도착한 날이었다.
